Rod, a retired Combat Engineer, served from 1962 to 1965 with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry before continuing with the Royal Canadian Engineers until 1973. He first came to the Veterans Association six years ago seeking support. Today, Rod volunteers daily at the Veterans Association, helping sort food and lending a hand wherever needed. His furry companion and service dog, Dude, who Rod describes as his lifeline: "He is my life." was supported through the VAFB’s Pet Promise Program, Rod’s vet bills have been covered, allowing him to avoid tough choices between paying for his pet’s care and covering essential living expenses like rent and food. The camaraderie at the Veterans Association reminds Rod of his service days, especially during the Thursday dinners, which help bring everyone closer. The outreach team also assisted him with his EVAC claims, putting him in a position to give back by volunteering. “Without the help of the Association, I don’t think I’d be here,” Rod reflects.
